  1. Hello everyone! My name is Bohan and I am an eleventh grader at Tallulah Falls School. This is my third year at this school. I am from Beijing, China and I am a residential student. My hobbies are doing some sports, such as swimming. I am a team member of the school swim team. I also like playing video games, hanging out with friends, and reading. I would like to learn insights about human thinking, emotions, and behavior from my psychology class, as well as skills on how to cope with stress, solve problems, and improve relationships. I also want to learn about the importance of mental health and how to promote mental well-being in myself and others.

  1. I think both articles may have some common problems in scientific research. In the first article, problems may include the lack of reference to the size, representativeness, and diversity of the study sample, which may affect the reliability of the study's conclusions. "The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that early television exposure (at ages 1 and 3) is associated with attentional problems at age 7."(Christakis)  Although the article noted an association between early television exposure and attentional problems at age 7, it was not able to prove causality and other factors not considered may have influenced attentional problems. Possible problems with the second article include deficiencies in citations and sources. The expert opinions and research findings mentioned in the article lack detailed citation sources, which may affect the reader's credibility of these ideas.

  1. Although there are some inaccuracies in the article, television does seem to be a big factor in children's attention span. After reading the author's analysis in the article, I would be willing to do some research, and I think it would be very interesting to look into this.

Hey Bohan!

I enjoyed reading what you had to say. I think you had some well written points supporting your reasoning behind what you thought. I like how you mentioned "the lack of reference to the size, representativeness, and diversity," as that can play a major role. To blame TV for the lack of attention of a seven year old without diversity bringing in the data.  I do think that gender and genetics also play a large role in collecting accurate data in this scenario. I do agree with what you had to about the second reading. It had some fair points and did mention the exact number in the age group, but that wasn't enough to be convinced of a credible source.

Hello Bohan,

Your response was very insightful and detailed. I really agreed with the point you made about how they couldn't prove the causality, also when you talked about how they didn't really address other factors that could've also caused attention problems. The citation sources point is also really good! I never even thought about that but that really puts a nail in the coffin for scientific inaccuracy though. I also think that looking into the idea of TV affecting the attention spans of children early on is an interesting idea because I would like to see more accurate articles on the same topic.
