  1. Short-term memory can be defined as “a temporary storage system that processes incoming sensory memory” (Spielman p. 257). As a student, enhancing my short-term memory would be extremely beneficial in preparing for assignments and exams. The most applicable method I read about was the use of “elaborative rehearsal” and “mnemonic devices.” Elaborative rehearsal involves relating new information to information you already know; mnemonic devices, such as acronyms, can help to memorize large amounts of information (Spielman p. 276). For example, instead of distractedly reading over vocabulary words, I could relate the letters in the word to another word I know.

  2. Some psychologists theorize that, as opposed to being genetic, intelligence is “shaped by a child’s developmental environment” (Spielman p. 243). I learned how to read before kindergarten, and was exposed to advanced literature throughout elementary school. Therefore, I have been successful in grammar and writing. As a child, I spent most of my time exploring outside and tending to our farm, which allowed my “naturalist intelligence” to expand.

  3. Naturalist intelligence, or the ability “to appreciate the natural world and interact with the species within it,” comes easiest to me (Spielman p. 235). I have always had an appreciation for nature, and I hope to continue studying environmental sciences in college. However, I have always struggled with Intrapersonal intelligence; it is hard for me to identify my own morals and goals in life. I find that I often feel unsure about my inner feelings and personal motivation.

Thanks for reading!
