Bailey Discussion #3

Hello Everyone!

  1. The results of my quiz were as follows: Extraversion 46%, Openness to Experience 77%, Conscientiousness 65%, Agreeableness 43%, and Neuroticism 85%. I was neither surprised with my score in Extraversion—I am generally a solitary person—nor my results regarding Openness to Experience. I consider myself to be curious and receptive to new ideas. However, I was surprised that I scored rather low in Agreeableness. I have always thought myself to be empathetic and caring, but taking this personality test has made me realize that I am very distrustful of others and have a pessimistic view of human nature. According to the quiz analysis, this might cause me “to be suspicious, unfriendly, and uncooperative”.

  2. I believe that most people reach the level of Love and Belonging at some point in their lives. In most societies, connection is unavoidable in everyday life—people go to school, work, or share their living space with others, which prompts them to form some kind of relationship.

Reaching the top two levels of the pyramid, Esteem and Self-actualization, proves difficult for many people. This deficit can be a result of heavy criticism or lack of encouragement from others; In addition, it can be complicated to establish your self-identity and recognize your interests and goals. Our lives are filled with distractions that prevent many people from reaching self-actualization.

Hey Allison!

After reading your opinions about why people do not make it to the top two levels of the pyramid; you had very similar beliefs as I did. I believe that we live in a society where everyone is expected to meet an unrealistic standard that most cannot nor should reach. The belief that people should reach this standard supplys an individual with negative views from othe people as well as their own self-conscience view. Do you think that people today do not reach the higher levels of the pyramid as people 200 years ago did? In other words, is our modern society the predominant issue to blame for people's lack of self-worth and value? I believe that our overuse of computers and technology may be contributing to our poor state of mental well-being.

      Thank you for your inshight,

                                   Timothy Beck
